CMC Foundation administrators and members of the Aspen Glen community are working together to create a scholarship to benefit residents in the Roaring Fork Valley who graduate with an associate degree from Colorado Mountain College and then wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the community college. Organizers hope to be able to fund two $2,500 scholarships for local students each year.

College administrators are pursuing approval from the state legislature to offer a limited number of bachelor’s degrees. If four-year degrees do not receive legislative approval, the new scholarship funds would be made available to associate of arts, associate of science or certificate program students at the college.

CMC Foundation Board Chair Jon Warnick, who lives in Aspen Glen, said his fellow residents are pleased to further an ongoing partnership with the college.

“Our partnership with CMC is designed to make Aspen Glen an integral part of the community,” Warnick said. “We think it’s very critical that we have scholarships and that there is money available for students who want to pursue their education. We’re delighted to create the first scholarship designed for students in the Roaring Fork Valley who want to move on to a four-year degree at the college.”

The February kickoff event, attended by some 75 people, included a live auction of paintings by Glenwood Springs artists Noemi and Kristof Kosmoswki and a silent auction of donated wines.

Colorado Mountain College student and scholarship recipient Zach French, who is completing his associate degree in graphic design at Spring Valley, spoke about how receiving scholarships motivates students. He said he should graduate debt-free in May.

“I think this extra motivation has really made me focus on keeping my grades high and having a really good experience here at CMC,” French said. “Scholarships are a great way to help students get an education so they can learn how to make a living doing what they love. Through CMC, I have found the passion for design and being creative.”

The Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris is offering ten two-year scholarships for a master in mathematics or in fundamental computer science.

Dates of PGSM call for applications

Applications for the PGSM programme can be made from January 31 to March 4 at midnight (Paris time).

Eligibility criteria

The scholarships are available to students who have or will have completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or computer science in a foreign higher education institution by September 2010 in mathematics or computer science. Selection will be on the basis of written applications, taking into account the scientific quality of previous studies and the academic references provided.

On-line application

Candidates apply on PGSM website. They are invited to complete the on-line form to which they will attach the following documents and informations:

* a curriculum vitae
* a degree certificate or a list of examination marks
* a covering letter explaining their scientific project and their reasons for applying
* the electronic address of a lecturer at the academic home institution, wishing to recommand them *
* (optional) the electronic address of a mathematician of the Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris, wishing to recommand them*

* An electronique message will be sent to them with the procedure to join a recommandation letter

The completed application must be submitted on the internet site of PGSM via the on-line form, before midnight on March 4, 2010 (Paris time).

Selection process

The selection will be carried out by the PGSM Steering Board, which includes the heads of the masters and the postgraduate school and the directors of the Fondation SciencesMathématiques de Paris.

A reply can be expected from March 31, 2010.

Vice-Chancellor’s Indigenous Undergraduate Tuition Fee Scholarships

UTS offers 6 Vice-Chancellor’s Indigenous Undergraduate Tuition Fee Scholarships, to recognise academic excellence in the final year of school.

In all, 1,015 scholarships have been granted to deserving graduate and undergraduate sisters to further their educational goals. These women exhibit academic excellence as well as dedication to serving the community and Alpha Omicron Pi.

The AOII Foundation awards scholarships to undergraduate, graduate and returning alumnae members each year. Scholarships are awarded from the Diamond Jubilee Endowment as well as several named scholarship funds. Named scholarships are awarded based on specific criteria established when the scholarship is first set up and the amount awarded each year is based on the earnings of the endowment. There is no separate application for Diamond Jubilee and named scholarships- simply complete one application, and the committee will evaluate the application first for any named scholarships you may qualify for, and then for Diamond Jubilee scholarships.

Current undergraduate students may apply for undergraduate scholarships for their sophomore, junior, or senior year. Graduating seniors or currently enrolled graduate students may apply for graduate scholarships, and active alumnae who have been out of school for some time but plan to return can apply using a special returning alumna application.

University College Cork – Science Foundation of Ireland UREKA Site

A UREKA Site hosted by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, the Department of Microbiology and the BioSciences Institute, is offering 12 research positions for the 12 weeks from June 14th to September 3rd 2010 in University College Cork, Ireland.

Positions are open to undergraduate students from Ireland and abroad. Undergraduate students currently in the final year of their degree are not eligible to apply. A stipend of €300 per week will be offered, and a contribution towards travel expenses will be given for international students. Student accommodation in Cork can be arranged.

The research theme of the UREKA Site is `Microbe-Host Interactions’ and includes topics on interactions between bacterial, fungal cells and viruses with host cells. This UREKA Site will provide other educational events (workshops, industrial site visits) to stimulate an interest in science careers.
